It’s pretty common knowledge by now that one of the chief reasons Apple beat out Google for RIM’s former throne is because iOS is viewed as inherently more secure than Android. The open-source nature of Google’s mobile operating system, often viewed as one of its greatest strengths here becomes the instrument of its downfall. We’ve discussed this in the past, of course- and the conclusion ultimately works out to be the same- although Android most definitely has the capacity for security, [...]
So, the unthinkable has happened. You’ve gone through a terrible data breach. Customer data has been compromised, your security was turned completely on its head, and client-facility relations might never be the same. And what’s worse, for whatever reason, one or more of your clients want to haul you to court.
Maybe you managed the whole incident poorly. Maybe they felt they deserved more compensation given the damage they accrued. Perhaps, however, they simply see an opportunity to make a [...]
When one devises a security solution for their data center, it’s never a matter of ‘fix and forget.’ On the contrary, keeping your data center secure and the data it deals with safe is a full-time job, and if you think you’re finished just because you managed to put one set of security policies in place, well…
Sorry to say this, but you’re wrong.
Like anything else, security policies eventually become outdated, and need to be reworked and revisited. Here’s a few signs that your own [...]
Aside from complete hardware failure, a data breach is one of the worst possible things that can happen in a Data Center. Dealing with one is often difficult- but never entirely impossible. We’ve already covered the processes involved in dealing with a breach, and damage control. Today, we’re going to look at a few of the specific methods an operator might use to aid in their facility’s recovery.
We’ll do this with the help of a recent Ponemon Institute Study, which examined the impact- and [...]

We’ve been witnessing a rather distressing number of security breaches this year. From Sony to Epsilon and even WordPress, the data market’s been springing more leaks than a sieve. It’s easy to think that something like this could never happen to you. Indeed, you could go on all day about how it was their fault- they didn’t protect themselves well enough, they didn’t prepare themselves for a co-ordinated attack, they failed to practice due diligence in their security procedures…
It’s [...]

The times, they are a-changin’. 2011 was a big year for the data world, and 2012 is looking to be even bigger. Over the past year we’ve seen data breaches by the dozen, the growth of the cloud, the mobile explosion, and much, much more. Now, with the year a full month behind us, everyone’s looking forward- and wondering what the future holds.
Let’s have a look.
Data Privacy Concerns
The constant data breaches(which lead to thousands of users having their personal information compromised, [...]

It’s pretty rare that legislation actually manages to keep up with technology- so color me impressed. The EU has announced that there’s a big change coming, and that they’ll be updating their data protection legislation to place the onus entirely on the businesses, establishing strict guidelines that businesses will be required to follow, and forcing businesses who’ve compromised customer data as a result of data breaches to pay some pretty hefty fines. The most revolutionary part of this [...]

Mobile’s going to happen- there’s no avoiding it at this point. The question is, when? The road to mobility- billed as the future of enterprise- has been anything but smooth, the path marked by a plethora of roadblocks, pitfalls, and detours. Though the end is in sight, we’re still a long ways away- and we’ve still got plenty of hurdles to jump.
If we play our cards right, however, we should be able to sail over all of them with ease.
Compliance and security issues abound, and many [...]
