Across industry lines the focus on “Green” solutions has slowly ebbed away from the mainstream. While many companies see the efficiency focus as an expensive marketing ploy that can slowly be pushed out of the picture with the shift in consumer focus, many industries continue to drive forward with huge bounds in green technologies and efficiency efforts. Examples can be seen in the auto industry with continued innovations in hybrid-powered cars; the energy industries with developing research in biofuels, solar and wind power and maybe most importantly (at least for the purposes of this articles) the Tech industry.
Green IT continues to blaze a path in the efficiency movement, and unlike other “Green” programs, IT efficiency is generally geared towards the cost savings aspect of maximizing power usage.
The most obvious, yet maybe most significant aspect of green IT can be seen in the race for data center efficiency. Huge strides continue to be seen in power and cooling technologies in the DC, and while knowledgeable about most technologies available to the data center manager and developer, I too am continuously shocked by the rate of innovation.
A recent article by Data Center Knowledge highlights a company that continues to push the envelope in green DC design. Green Revolution Cooling has developed a new way to cool servers that offers a 90-95% reduction in cooling energy use. The Green Revolution Design kicks down the server rack and fills it with a liquid coolant (a bit more technical than that but you get the idea).
The cutting edge liquid coolant system has had remarkable results in case studies around the world, including a facility in Stockholm that uses recycled water from the system to heat surrounding office buildings.
